OnShape

Onshape is a computer-aided design (CAD) software platform delivered over the internet via a Software as a Service (SaaS) model. It is known for being the first and only “full-cloud” 3D CAD system, meaning the software and user data are stored and accessed entirely online through a web browser or mobile apps, eliminating the need for local installation and maintenance.

The platform is primarily used for product design and is equipped with tools for 3D modeling, assemblies, and detailed 2D drawings. A key differentiator of Onshape is its integrated version control and real-time collaboration features, allowing multiple users to work on the same model simultaneously.

Key Features

Onshape's architecture provides several unique capabilities not found in traditional CAD software:

Cloud-Native Architecture: The platform runs entirely in a web browser and on iOS and Android devices. All design work is automatically saved in the cloud, making it accessible from any location without being tied to a specific workstation.

Real-Time Collaboration: Multiple users can view, edit, and comment on the same design document simultaneously. Changes made by one user are visible to all other team members in real-time, similar to collaborative web applications like Google Docs.

Integrated Version Control: Unlike traditional CAD systems that rely on saving and managing separate files (e.g., “part_v1.sldprt”, “part_final.sldprt”), Onshape uses a database architecture with built-in version control. Every design change is recorded in a detailed history, allowing users to create immutable versions, branch designs to explore new ideas, and merge changes without the risk of overwriting data.

Parametric Modeling: It is a full-featured parametric modeling tool, allowing designers to create 3D parts, complex multi-part “Part Studios,” and assemblies.

Integrated PDM/PLM: Basic product data management (PDM) functionalities like release management workflows and bills of materials (BOMs) are built directly into the platform.
